Deepam Candles (Auroville) – 11 Gratitude | Parijat
These samples come from a generous parcel that my friend Silver sent me from India at the beginning of 2024.
Deepam Candles describe themselves as ‘a unit of Auroville’; to what extent they’re also part of the Mereville Trust, I don’t know.
Parijat is part of the Petals Collection; a line of 12 fragrances that each represent one of the 12 qualities of ‘the Mother’ (as the founder of Auroville is called).
I don’t think the brand is sold in Germany, although Auroville does a lot of exporting.
In Deepam Candles’ shop, a pack with 12 sticks costs ₹45 before tax, so about €0.50; there are also packs with 50 sticks for ₹120 plus tax.
The burning time is given as 45 minutes. They’re 8″ (approx. 20.5cm) long dipped incense sticks.

Parijat have a very robust jasmine fragrance: floral, very heady and bright and interwoven with slightly fruity and subtly green notes. I think I’m also smelling a hint of neroli, which lends the fragrance a certain dryness.
Parijat are very potent but without any off-notes; I smell neither the charcoal nor a thinner. These are well-made, very affordable jasmine incense sticks.
