Jiri & Friends – Sandalwood
I received these four Jiri & Friends incense sticks in early 2023 as part of an incense exchange.
They cost between €7.90 and €9.95 per pack. A pack contains 15 incense sticks, equalling about 15g.
I haven’t found any information about the burning time, but I think it’s about half an hour, maybe 45 minutes.
Ingredients: Sandalwood, tree bark, bamboo sticks.
Unfortunately, it is not mentioned which sandalwood is used, and Jiri & Friends are anything but forthcoming with information.
Sandalwood has a very natural, slightly smoky wood scent with a clearly recognizable sandalwood character, which gives the smoke a pleasant softness. Additionally, I find a slightly sour note in it, which I often encounter in sandalwood. The sandalwood scent is of the same type as, for example, the Indonesian ‘Mysore Grade’ sandalwood powder I bought at Jeomra’s Räucherwelt. I have also bought wood powder of similar quality from Jarguna.
I smell a specific, spicy note that I also find in Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum). So, perhaps Sandalwood sticks are even made of a blend of different sandalwood types.
I only begin to perceive the classic sandalwood sweetness after repeated use, and even then, it is remarkably subtle. Overall, the scent remains rather dry.
I find Sandalwood very plain, which is not surprising with only three ingredients. They are pleasant without drawing much attention and quickly fade from consciousness. Personally, I find them a bit too boring.
However, I think these incense sticks are well-suited for people looking for a natural, simple, and rather understated sandalwood scent. I would especially recommend them as a significantly better alternative to Take Me To The Yoga Shala.
I am already looking forward to comparing Jiri & Friends‘ Sandalwood with the sandalwood incense sticks made by Jeomra. These are made with the aforementioned Indonesian sandalwood and also contain its essential oil.
