Bhagwan – Patchouli
Diese Packung Räucherstäbchen habe ich im September 2023 direkt von Bhagwan Incense gekauft. Die Schachteln enthalten bei allen Sorten 15g, da sie aber aus verschiedenen Quellen stammen (aktuell fünf) und ihre Machart sehr unterschiedlich ist, variieren die enthaltenen Stückzahlen stark. Patchouli sind eher dünn gerollt, die 15g meiner Packung entsprachen 15 Räucherstäbchen. Der aktuelle Preis liegt bei 4,95€ – 35ct pro Stäbchen; als ich die Packung gekauft habe, lag der Preis bei 5,95€.
Disclosure: Aufgrund meiner Vorgeschichte mit, und freundlichen Beziehung zu Eugene, dem Eigentümer von Bhagwan Incense, möchte ich darauf hinweisen, dass ich Reviews dieser Marke nicht völlig unbefangen schreiben kann. Eine Vielzahl der Bhagwan-Reviews schreibe ich auf Basis von Samples, die mir geschenkt wurden – diese werden entsprechend gekennzeichnet.

Dieses Patchouli ist super Vanille-intensiv und süß. Ich bin überrascht, dass es nicht Patchouli & Vanilla heißt, so präsent wie die Vanille darin ist. Nicht, dass das etwas Schlechtes wäre – Vanille und Patchouli ist eine wunderbare Kombination – es ist nur nicht das, was ich erwartet hatte.
Der Geruch versetzt mich zurück in meine frühen 20er-Jahre, als ich mir noch selbst “Parfüm” aus ätherischem Öl von Patchouli und Vanille gemischt habe und er hat damit eine starke Nostalgie inne. Es ist damit aber auch ein Duft meiner Vergangenheit, den ich nicht mehr aktiv suche.
Der Patchouli Geruch in diesen Räucherstäbchen ist erdig, aber nicht schwer; es fühlt sich schlank an, elegant sogar, hat aber nichts von der minzigen Frische, die ich in manch anderen Patchouli Düften finde.
Das geruchliche Volumen bringt hauptsächlich die Vanille, die in dieser Komposition nicht als eindimensionale Süße, sondern sehr vielschichtiger Aspekt auftritt. Sie formt mit der Basis ein sehr breites, rundes Bett, auf dem die unverkennbar dunkle Note von Patchouli Öl ruht.
Eugene spricht in seiner Beschreibung von einer Wein-artigen Note und ich fange an zu erkennen, was er meint. Da ist ein samtiger, vage fruchtiger Unterton. Ich habe in anderen Patchouli Räucherstäbchen schon den Geruch von Fermentation (wie bei Schwarztee) wahrgenommen. Vielleicht verbindet sich diese Note hier mit einem Aspekt der Vanille oder einer anderen Zutat und erzeugt diese Assoziation.
Lässt man dem Geruch viel Raum und Luft, wird das Patchouli etwas vordergründiger, aber es steht nie für sich. Denke ich über Patchouli als Single-Note nach, finde ich die Vanille definitiv zu stark, lasse ich mich auf das Duftprofil aber richtig ein, würde ich es durchaus als rund und stimmig bezeichnen.
Die Vanille bleibt auch im Nachgeruch für lange Zeit sehr dominant. Über Stunden hinweg rieche ich weiche, aromatische Vanille-Süße mit einem Hauch von Patchouli im Hintergrund, erst nach etwa einem halben Tag dreht sich meine Wahrnehmung hin zu einer tieferen Note von Patchouli, eingerahmt von einer vagen, süßen Würzigkeit.
Ich komme nicht umhin zu bemerken, wie identisch diese Patchouli zu Pure – Absolute Patchouli aussehen. Ob sie auch gleich riechen, weiß ich nicht, da ich die von Pure bisher nie probiert habe. Aber auch ohne diese optische Ähnlichkeit war mein erster Gedanke, dass diese Räucherstäbchen aus dem Hause HMS stammen müssen, von denen unter anderem auch Pure Incense ihre Räucherstäbchen beziehen. Es ist also eine Ähnlichkeit zumindest sehr wahrscheinlich.
Kennen Sie die Marke Pure, oder auch Gokula nicht, ist ihnen die Vanille-lastige Basis vielleicht von Holy Smokes bekannt. Im Vergleich zu deren Patchouli Garden ist Bhagwan – Patchouli ein deutliches Upgrade, denn ihr Geruch ist um so vieles reichhaltiger.
Wenn Sie einen dunklen, krautigen und stark erdigen Patchouli Duft suchen, werden Sie bei Bhagwan – Patchouli nicht fündig. Sollten Sie aber nach einer süßen, warmen und freundlichen Vanille und Patchouli Kombination Ausschau halten, sind diese Räucherstäbchen die vielleicht beste Option, die ich aktuell kenne.

I’ve currently got four HMS sticks side by side – Bhagwan Lavender Bliss; Blue Pearl Lavender (x2); and Ab Lavender sold by Sacred Boutique. Why I ended up with two different packets of Blue Pearl Lavender I don’t know. They all look the same, and they all smell the same. But they also smell slightly different to each other – including the two packs of Blue Pearl. I don’t see any way that someone packing the incense would be able to tell which batch was for which retailer. And given that the two Blue Pearls smell slightly different to each other could be down to differences in batches.
When looking at various videos of incense being made, I note that the big companies, like Satya and HEM, have very good quality control; while the smaller “artisan” houses are more casual, and the conditions are often quite messy. There’s positives and negatives to both approaches. My heart goes to the casual, with the thought and knowledge that some poor batches will be made, but also some awesome batches will emerge. While the strict quality control will certainly result in consistency, so there will be no underperforming batches; that also means that the accidental sublime will never occur.
On a separate note – the white on black appearance of your website causes an afterimage effect in my eyes, and a stuttering effect while reading. Quite disconcerting. First time I’ve noticed it. It’s OK here where the background is grey.
I am sorry to hear that you had a bad experience when reading this article. Whilst a change to our Website-Theme is for the short term not very feasible, I do have some possible solutions for you:
1. I use the “Dark Reader” Browser Plugin, which gives great aide in not only darkening most websites, but also has some great contrast options, which can help mitigate some optical effects.
2. Most Browser nowadays ship with a “Reader” mode or view. Firefox, Edge and Safari have it. Very recent versions of Chrome do too, but have it only as an “experimental” feature that you need to enable first. There are also browser extensions that do that.
3. Try to increase the Page Zoom.
I would be interested to know, when you experience this problem, i.e. on which device in which browser. You may be not the only one with this problem and I like to find the cause and maybe even a solution in time, that does not require action by the reader.
I am using Chrome on a custom made HP desktop with an old Digihome 32 inch TV monitor.
If it helps – my graphics card is Intel HD 4600. I have an old machine.

I haven’t asked Eugene about it, but I am 100% certain this is HMS. Given how many different sellers have rebranded HMS in their stock, there is little point in having a different blog entry for each brand as they are all the same stick (it’s the same as having a different review for each shop you bought Satya Nag Chama), I’m going to put in one place all the reviews of the same stick that I discover I have made.
I really wasn’t aware until recently just how many sellers there are rebranding HMS. And it was only after I burned and reviewed some Rasbihari Lal incense that I realised just how widespread HMS is. Happy Hari, Bhagwan, Absolute Bliss, Gokula, Rasbihari Lal, Primo, ToI, Pure, Sacred Elephant, Prasad, Worldly Aromas, etc, etc, etc It’s getting a bit silly! You can buy and review the exact same incense over 10 times in different brands. The incense will be the same, the only difference will be the name, the packet, and the price.
I think HMS have oversold themselves.
It has to be HMS. I just don’t want to make claims about such things when I don’t know for sure.
I get your point, but I like to sort them by the brand names they are sold as because that’s the name people will know and look for. Not everyone is an incense nerd like we are, who knows about producers… 😉
I have not been able to directly compare the HMS produced incenses from many brands yet, but if I had the chance to, I found that they are most always recognizable (as HMS) but also different enough to the next brand’s offer to distinguish them. To me, it seems like they do some custom adaptions and tweaks to the recipes. The only exception I found so far is Bhagwan – Pure Amber and BERK – Amber Moon; they are indistinguishable to my nose.
